According to the 2007 census, Arakan has a population of 38,717 residents and is part of the big group of 1073 cities and municipalities in the Philippines which have more than 10.000 residents but did not reach 50.000 population yet. Based on the number of its inhabitants Arakan is number 624 of the most populous cities of the Philippines and at 154 in Mindanao group of islands and at 15 of the most populous cities of province Cotabato (North Cotabato). With an area of 693.22 km² Arakan is one of the cities with a smaller urban area. Based on its area area, it ranks only as the 4th of the smallest cities of the province of Cotabato (North Cotabato).
According to the Philippine income classification for provinces, cities and municipalities Arakan is a 2nd class municipality. The urbanization status of Arakan is classified as partly urban.
